In the hopes of being able to make my dolls available to more people, I have decided to try my hand at making a mold and casting in resin. A little while ago, I finished sculpting the prototype, who I have named Polina. The whole process of making the mold ended up being between five and six hours, so I am dearly hoping that it turns out to be usable. On a side note, I apologize for the poor photo quality. I did not make the mold at my house and I forgot to bring my camera, so my mobile phone had to do the job.

Back Again...

I've decided to pick up this blog again. However, I'm still running my newer blog over on Tumblr.I love Tumblr, but it does seem to be a little temperamental, with greater chances of it going down. I figure it can't hurt to start posting again on this one in the likely chance that my other blog will be down from time to time.

I'm much too lazy to post all of the dolls I've made since I've last posted here. So, I'll just post the most recent. Summer has hit and along with it, heat. Dreadful, crushing heat. To combat this unpleasant climate, I like to pretend that it is fall or winter. This includes listening to Christmas music. In keeping with pretending it is December, I decided to make some doll ornaments. They turned out lovely. I am especially fond of Kolina (above). I have such a soft spot of neutrals and creams.

I took a stab at using horsehair on one of them (Omie, above). While it looks wonderful, the process of using it was not. It's very coarse and thick. And straight. My god is it straight. In the end, it was worth it.

Kolina and Omie have already been claimed and will be off to new homes this week. It'll be sad to see them go, I was kind of hoping they'd hang around for a bit. Ahhh.... bad puns... Beladore (above) is still up for grabs.

I've officially switched to posting all new blog entries only on my Tumblr blog now. However, I've decided to hop back on here and just post this quick note.

I've entered one of my newest pieces, "185", into a Saatchi Online Showdown. The winnings include a cash prize and having the winning piece exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London. The winner is decided by online votes. A person is able to vote for a piece once per day. The first round of voting lasts two weeks.

New Year & Other New Things...

Well, it's a new year. With the new year, I'm shaking things up a bit as far as my online presence goes. For one, a brand new website with a "real" web address is in the works and should make it's debut next week.

Two, I've decided to jump ship from Blogger and try out Tumblr. I can't say anything bad about Blogger, a change of venue just feels pleasant at the moment.

So, for updates on dolls I'm working on, events, and shop updates please refer to my new blog: karlyperez.tumblr.com, as I will more than likely not post on this blog any longer. I've also made a promise to myself to do blog updates more often, if nothing more than a photograph of works in progress.

Next week will be one of "happenings". New website, a few new dolls, and maybe announcements about upcoming events?

RVA First Friday at Gallery5

Well, it's Friday. It's the first Friday of December. Those of you in the Richmond area know this means it's time for the galleries to open their doors for another monthly art walk.

Gallery5 is having what should be a spectacular event. I'm sad to say that I will be unable to attend. I will however be there in spirit through some of my newest dolls. So head on over there tonight and don't forget to check out the shop on the second floor and give a visit to the goils!

As of today a handful of my dolls will be available in the GallowLily's shop in Gallery5. This is beyond exciting. The shop and gallery have such amazing things and I'm so happy that my work is being included. In all, there will be five pieces available (they're listed here).

They're having what should be a great event this Friday, as part of Richmond's monthly First Friday. There will be art sold to support the non-profit Art 180 as well as vendors and DJs. I unfortunately won't be able to attend, but my dolls will be available for purchase in the shop. So, if you're in the Richmond area on Friday evening, stop in and have a peek.

While strolling around the interwebs, I've been seeing something about the first annual "buy handmade" day being this Saturday. I don't really know what that is all about. To be honest, I don't care enough to take the few minutes to read up on it. On a good note, lots of new items will be hitting my online shop very soon. New dolls, ornaments, and prints will all make an appearance. Now for the bad. The shop will be temporarily closed from Friday, Nov 19th until the evening of Sunday, Nov 21st.

I finally got around to making an actual website. With that, I've taken down the various pages in my blog. I've only posted some of my recent dolls on my website, so if you want to peek at my earlier works, they're all on my Flickr. The website is in it's infancy as it were, so it will have a bit more oomph in the not so distant future.

I've also just finished up another doll, Dorothea. She's listed for sale in my shop. I've become very fond of her, thus a small part of me wishes that she won't sell. Oh well!

CATCHING UP...

I have been slightly lackadaisical about updating the blog. I shall try to bring myself back into the habit of posting slightly more often.

Anyway, Autumn is finally here! I've been looking forward to this moment since Spring. I am not one who is built for hot (or even warm) weather. So, each Spring and Summer I tuck myself away in my cold house, put on sweaters and burn spice scented candles all in vain; attempting to trick myself into believing that it is in indeed Fall. I haven't baked in eons, so with pumpkin being my favorite of all flavors I'm hoping that I can fall back into the habit of making warm, sweet goodies.

With Autumn comes lots of work for me to do. Christmas is peeking out just around the corner, with it are holiday shoppers and a multitude of craft fairs. So I'm trying to be a busy bee, creating as much as I possibly can. In the past week or so I have posted a few new pieces in the Shop.

MIRABEL

I've made my return from Puerto Rico and the shop has been taken off it's hiatus. With the re-opening comes a new doll up for sale, Mirabel.

I'll probably get around to writing a bit about Puerto Rico this weekend. I didn't go for vacation, so I didn't do much sight seeing and I didn't bring my nice camera.

Shop News...

Sadly, circumstances have risen that prevent me from taking orders (and finishing any dolls) until the week of August 30th. Therefore, my shop will be closed until next week. Hopefully the grand re-opening next week will include one or two new dolls.

And on to some fun...

I will not leave you empty handed, however. I've included the entire movie Snow White: A Tale of Terror in twelve parts. I hadn't seen it in years and happened to be reminded of it a week or so back. I looked for it on Netflix, with not much luck. I wanted to at least show a clip of it to my husband, so I searched for it on YouTube. Wouldn't you know it, someone was lovely enough to upload the entire thing on their channel.

I've always had a soft spot for folk and fairy tales, in all forms. The darker versions have always hit more of a chord with me, however. This version of Snow White isn't perfect, but it's definitely worth seeing if you haven't yet. It has a less magical, fluffy tone to it than some versions. It's slightly more, for lack of a better word, raw and lurid. Plus, it has Sigourney Weaver. After Aliens, she can do no wrong.

I became preoccupied with other things today; including, but not limited to, a case of the lazies and a trip to the fabric store. I cannot help but go crazy around bolts of fabric. It's on the verge of a sickness. A wonderful sickness that leads me to find black and white seersucker.

So, with all the nonsense I did today, I regretfully did not get around to finishing Mirabel.There are still a few ruffles and rosettes to sew, which I'm not particularly looking forward to. The plan is to have her completed by tomorrow.

BACK INTO THE SWING OF THINGS

I have been trying to work on my day to day time management. So, I've made an hourly daily schedule for myself. I have to say that it's helped me be a lot more productive so far. Allotting a specific time to sculpt has allowed me to get a lot of dolls underway quickly. It's also helped keep me from becoming burned out from working on one item for too long.

Mirabel's dress (seen to the right) would have normally caused me to have a nervous breakdown. However, with my handy dandy new schedule, I haven't felt stressed about it once. There are lots of tiny rosettes to be made and then hand stitched, which takes a long time. Usually I would try to get it done all in one night, leading me to go to bed angry and frustrated. I now have a specific time during the day to work on clothing, which allows an invisible force to make me stop working before I become enraged.

CHICAGO

Chicago is an incredible city. It was my first time visiting, and I was taken aback by it as soon as I saw the city skyline upon the airplane's decent.

Since the main purpose of the visit was to see my husband's family, majority of my time was spent on the north side and not downtown. I was able to see a bit of downtown my first day. Some of the buildings are simply out of this world. I was quite taken with the Holy Name Cathedral (shown below). It's breathtaking inside and out. Since Sunday mass was in session when I was there, I decided it wouldn't be appropriate to take photographs of the inside. It has a colorful history as well, burning down multiple times and having it's facade at one time being home to many bullet holes from tommy guns of the 1920's.

Next to the cathedral, my second love was the marvelous landscaping throughout the city. It made the city the prettiest urban area I've ever seen. Each block had lush and unique plant life. I was so in awe of it that I probably missed some interesting buildings completely and I definitely became so engrossed that I failed to take more pictures of each of little oasis.

The rest of my trip was spent in the north side of the city, which is much more residential and has very high Puerto Rican and Polish populations. My tummy was in pure heaven the entire trip. My taste buds were so exhilarated that I think it's necessary that I name and describe each eatery and bakery I visited.

Our first sweet spot was Baker's Square. It's a national chain (and apparently there's one in the state I live in), but I had never been there nor heard of it. I recommend the key lime pie. It was perfect, not too sweet and just enough tartness. The banana cream pie was likewise mouthwatering. The filling was a perfectly prepared banana pudding nestled in nicely done crust.

Next was Roeser's Bakery. It's been in business for 99 years and has been able to be kept within the same family. Inside the shop, above the door are the faces of the Roeser men, senior to the fourth. I had an apple turnover, which was slightly too sweet, but I happily devoured it in only a few bites. We bought a strawberry cake for my husband's birthday that was pretty impressive. You can't go wrong with a strong cake recipe and layer of perfectly glazed strawberries inside the cake. The cream of the crop was the pecan coffee cake. Words cannot describe how delicious it is. I simply cannot do it justice. You just have to taste it for yourself. I may go so far to say that it's worth a trip to Chicago to just pick up a few of these beauties.

Last, but not least, is Richard's Polish Bakery. It is as they say "old school", and therefore don't have a website, at least not one that I can find. They're located at 6006 W Belmont Ave, if you're ever in the area and wish to partake in the sweet smorgasbord they have to offer. This was by far my favorite of the three. I have a taste for Eastern European baking and Richard's does it very well. There is an incredible smell that first hits you as you walk in. Then, you're surrounded with completely stocked shelves of breads, cakes, pastries, cookies, and sweet breads. They have one cookie that is simply to die for. It consists of two shortbread cookies, half of which is dipped in chocolate. The inside contains a fruit mixture which I cannot quite pinpoint, but plum is definitely in there. The thing I love about the sweets at Richard's, as well as most baked goods from the eastern block, is that it's very subtle on the sugar. Most of the sweet is pulled in through the use of fruit. They, however, go hard on the richness. While we bought a lot of goodies from the shop (various sweet breads, apple slice, and cookies), they didn't last very long. Richard's will most definitely be my very first stop next time I am in Chicago.

There is a staple sweet spot that should be mentioned, Andrew's Carmel Apples at 5001 W Belmont Ave. It's a factory where you can place orders for pick-up. Their standard apples are pretty impressive, but it's their specialty apples that are astonishing. We picked up some that are coated with caramel, pecans, and then a rich dark chocolate. I'm not sure if it's possible to eat an entire one in one sitting, but I was happy to attempt it.

As for "normal" food, we spent most of our dinners eating at home, which I was more than happy about because my momma-in-law makes some incredibly scrumptious beef with rice and beans. We did make one lunch stop, however, that I cannot stop thinking about. The place is called Luke's and good god can they make a sandwich. I had the combination sandwich (which is really the only way to go if you're eating there). Picture it. A thick hoagie roll, soaked with grease. Spilling out of it is a large, perfectly seasoned Italian sausage with massive amounts of roast beef and sweet peppers piled on top. It is pure heart attack inducing heaven. My salivary glands are in over production just thinking about.

All in all, I had an unbelievably amazing time in Chicago. Great food and great company with the adventure of being in a new place, even a hermit like myself has to give in to the enjoyment of it.

HOME SWEET HOME

I've returned from my trip to Chicago. I had an absolutely marvelous time. I'll write all about the sights and sounds (and food) in the next day or two, once I finish going through some of the photographs I took.

Since I am back at home, my shop is up and running again. I'll be finishing up a few dolls this week or the next that will be posted for sale, so stay tuned.

I've also posted photographs in the "Dolls" section of the two dolls I made for my husband's (and now my new) grandma and aunt.

SHORT STORIES

I've been working on a collection of short stories lately. My goal is to have them finished up, along with the dolls and illustrations for each by the end of the year. Then I'll go down the long, frustrating road of sending the book to publishers and waiting six months or more to hear the word "nope". As I am finishing up the written segments, I've decided to post them on here in their very own section marked "Stories". So, head on over and give them a read. The longest ones are no more than three pages. If you love it so dearly that it moves you to tears or if you hate it so much you want to claw your eyes out, I'd love to know. FOR THE LOVE OF... TREATS

There is a lovely sweets shop here in Richmond by the name of For the Love of Chocolate. They have absolutely anything and everything that an experienced sweet tooth, like myself, could want. My husband and I are wise enough to not frequent the store often. That could have disastrous results to our body's blood sugar levels as well as our pocket book. We happened to be in the neighborhood over the weekend, so we gave in to temptation and visited the shop.

I found rose water, which I've been casually looking for for some time now. I have a feeling a rose tea cake recipe will be gracing the blog in the next week or two. They had a nice selection of vanilla beans and extracts that I had to quickly move away from as to not buy the whole lot.

My favorite find was a box of Italian mints. They had a handful of flavors, including absinthe, but I had to pick up the violet flavored ones. On top of having rare and wonderful flavors, the packaging is simply beautiful.

It has been a loose tradition for as long as I can remember for my grandparents to spend the 4th of July watching the musical 1776. It's a yearly treat I do look forward to. Sadly, this year I can't partake in watching the film with them, so I'll just have to post some of my favorite songs on here.

Crabtree Falls

Nestled within the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County, Virginia is Crabtree Falls. It's the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi and absolutely beautiful. It's been a favorite spot of mine, along with the entire county, since my dad moved there when I was a child. It's dense woods make it continuously dark, cool, and quiet. The perfect atmosphere for the mole that I am.

Some girlfriends and I made the drive out there today for a hike It's a 1.7 mile climb up the falls, but since I had a nasty bug about a week ago my body had only the strength to go the first mile. Hopefully we can make it back soon so I can climb to the tippy-top of the falls.

While taking a bit of a rest around the one mile marker, this little guy was creeping along next to me. I have never seen a caterpillar quite like this. I'm use to them looking rather cute and innocent. This one, on the other hand, looks pure evil.

Update: Apparently my black and spike covered friend is the Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillar. I saw them in butterfly form at the falls as well. I can tell you with great pleasure that they lose their rough demeanor and become quite lovely when they get their wings.

Salsa Beef 'n' Bread

For a quick 'n' easy din-din

1 lb ground beef

1 cup chunky salsa

Grands flaky layers biscuits

Cheddar cheese, shredded

Mozzarella cheese, shredded

Adobo seasoning, to taste

Season beef with Adobo

In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown beef & drain fat

Add salsa and mix together, let simmer

Grease muffin pan & pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit

Roll out each biscuit to about 5 inches

Place biscuits in wells of muffin pan, pressing dough on the bottom, up the sides & over the edge

Spoon beef into each well and sprinkle with cheeses

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until biscuits are golden and cheese is melted

Eat 'n' enjoy!

Richmond Etsy Craft Party

I recently joined the Richmond Etsy Street Team and the group is helping to throw an Etsy Craft Party/Meet-n-Greet this coming Friday, June 18th. It's in honor of Etsy's birthday and there will be craft parties going on all over the country. The Richmond party is free and open to the public. There will be some snacks and crafting stations and supplies. You can even bring your own supplies to share or crafting project!

I had January sculpted and painted back in... well, January. I had started working on her dress, and I really wasn't happy with it. So, I scrapped it and set her aside. I finally came back to her this week after picking up a fuzzy, gauzy fabric. She's the last doll I'll do in polymer for a while. I'm enjoying the paper clay much more.

She stands approximately 19 inches tall, has natural wool hair & glass bird eyes, poseable arms, and is painted with acrylics & pencils.

This doll is named in memory of Hannie Sarris. She was an amazing doll artist, and without her I would have never found the art of doll making. Regretfully, she passed away last week. It's amazing how someone I've never met, who lives an ocean away has had an impact on my life. She was the first doll artist that I came across and her work inspired me like no other artist or medium has. Her work truly gave the world an unearthly beauty.

I have nicked named Saffron "the doll of 1,001 neck breaks". I've had a time with this one, I'll tell ya. Due to a few small mistakes made by me, poor Saffron's neck just cannot support the weight of her big ol' head and those buttons all that well. Toss in the fact that clumsy me knocked her over more than once, her neck had a few cracks. Luckily, they were all cosmetic since her armature is holding her noggin on. Nonetheless, each time she broke, I diligently put her back together with the super bonding agent known as epoxy.

After three or four breaks, I thought all was well. I finished painting her, varnishing her, and making her clothes. All that was left to do was make her wig and toss it on. Well, I'll be damned if her neck didn't snap one last time as I was styling her hair.

I decided to leave this last crack, which is under her chin, as a memento of how fragile she has been through the whole process of making her. I have to say that, frustration aside, I love her. In fact, I'd go so far as to say she's my favorite I've made so far.

She's sculpted from polymer clay and has a stained, wood candlestick base. She has button eyes, crepe wool hair, and is painted with pencils and acrylics. Her dress is made of layers and layers of lace. Oh, and there is a whole ton of epoxy on securing that neck under all that lace.

Red Raspberry Jam Muffins

1-1/2 cups flour

1/3 cup sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 egg, beaten

3/4 cup milk

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup red raspberry preserves*

2 tablespoons butter, melted

granulated sugar, for garnish

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit & line 12 cup muffin pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, & salt.

Make a well in the center & set aside.

In a smaller mixing bowl, combine the egg, milk, oil, and vanilla.

Pour the wet mixture into the dry all at once.

Stir together just until blended. There will still be some lumps.

Pour batter into prepared muffin pan, filling two-thirds full.

Top each with 1 teaspoon of the raspberry preserves.

Swirl the jam into the batter with a toothpick.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Remove from oven and let cool in pan for 5 minutes.

Remove from pan to cooling rack.

Brush melted butter on the tops & sprinkle with sugar.

Eat 'n' enjoy!

*You may substitute raspberry preserves for any flavor you wish

I've become a bit lazy when it comes to the blog and have hardly posted anything in the last couple of months. I got married in the fall and of course I waited til the last minute to plan the wedding. Then came Christmas. Followed by a much needed re-organization of the apartment.

Needless to say, things have been a bit hectic. Finally, everything is getting back to normal. Hopefully I'll be updating more frequently now.

Anywho, on the the good stuff. I'm a fall and winter person. Besides liking chilly weather, I find the whole atmosphere of the colder months to be inspiring. So, I decided to pay homage to this wondrous time of the year and make dolls inspired by each month. I'm doing them out of order, as I'm working on February now and January second. I suppose there's not any harm in that.

After spotting unfinished wooden candlesticks in the craft store, I decided to use that as the base of the doll. I then sculpted the bust on top of the candlestick and then stained the wood. The arms will be attached later with wire.

Individual Bread Puddings

7 cups bread cubes*

1 cup half & half

1 cup milk

4 eggs, lightly beaten

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled

2/3 cup sugar

2 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/3 cup flour

1/2 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 cup raisins

1 granny smith apple, diced

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 tablespoon water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 12 cup muffin pan.

In a large mixing bowl, pour half & half and milk over bread cubes and let stand for 5 minutes.

Stir in eggs, butter, sugar, and vanilla.

In a small mixing bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, salt, and spices.

Stir flour mixture into the bread cube mixture.

Fold in the raisins and diced apples.

Using an ice cream scoop, spoon batter into the muffin pan.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Cool in pan for 5 minutes.

Combine the powdered sugar and water until it's a thin consistency, adding water as necessary.

Remove from pan onto a wire rack.

Drizzle powdered sugar glaze over the tops.

Eat 'n' enjoy!

*Use one or two day old breads such as French or Italian. You can cut the crust off or leave it on

Cherry Almond Scones

2 cups flour

1/3 cup sugar

1 tablespoon poppy seeds

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup butter

1 egg

1/3 cup sour cream

2 teaspoons almond extract

1/2 cup dried & sweetened cherries

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a food processor, blend together the flour, sugar, poppy seeds, baking powder, and salt.

Add the butter and process until coarse crumbs are formed.

In a medium sized mixing bowl, beat the egg.

Add the sour cream and almond extract to the egg and whisk together.

Stir the flour mixture together with the egg mixture and mix in the cherries.

Flour the counter top and pat out the dough so it's about 1/4 inch thick.

Cut dough into triangle shaped slices and put on an ungreased baking sheet.

Bake for 10 to 14 minutes.

Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!

Mashed 'n' Baked Butternut Squash

1 medium sized butternut squash

3 eggs, beaten

1 cup milk

3/4 cup sugar

3 tablespoons butter, melted

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon ginger

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease an 8x8 baking pan.

Cut squash in half and spoon out the seeds.

Place on a plate & cover with a paper towel.

Microwave for about 5 minutes until tender.

Scrape out the pulp into a medium sized mixing bowl.

Using a fork, mash the pulp until smooth.

Add the remaining ingredients and mix together.

Pour into baking pan and bake for 40 minutes.

Remove, stir, and bake for an additional 10 minutes.

Eat 'n' enjoy!

Bonnibel the Bag Lady

Bonnibel is my result for the concept of an "upcycled" doll. Her body is made from old brown grocery bags with copper brads attaching all of the limbs. Her eyes are pennies (I hate them and usually toss them out), and her hair is scraps of various sizes of twine. For her dress, I did an acrylic wash on some old tissue paper left over from Christmas last year. I was very pleased with the effect I ended up getting. I lined the dress with raw tissue paper. Her waist is wrapped in left over bits of tread with a small stem of dried flowers tucked into the thread.

Quick Cranberry Chicken

6 boneless, skinless frozen chicken breasts

1/2 tablespoon olive oil

garlic powder, to season

ground black pepper, to season

1/2 small onion, chopped

1 cup (8oz) whole-berry cranberry sauce

1/2 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons dark brown sugar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 13x9 inch baking dish.
Defrost chicken and season with garlic powder and black pepper on both sides.

In a large skillet on medium heat, heat oil and add chicken.

Cook, covered, for about 4 minutes on each side.

Move chicken to the baking dish and set aside.

Leaving the oil and juices in the skillet, add the onions.

Cook the onions, uncovered, for about 5 minutes until they're tender.

Add the rest of the ingredients.

Cook for about 2 minutes, until everything is heated.

Pour the sauce over the chicken and bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

Sweet Potato Pudding

1 cup milk, warmed

1 cup sugar

1/4 cup butter, melted

2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla

1/8 teaspoon salt

3 eggs, beaten

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lightly grease a 9 inch pie plate.

In a large bowl, stir together sweet potatoes and milk.

Add the rest of the ingredients.

Pour into the pie plate.

Bake for one hour.

Let cool for 5 min and enjoy!

Meatloaf

1.5 to 2 lbs ground beef

2 eggs, beaten

1 cup quick cooking oats*

1/2 cup shredded Italian cheeses (such as mozzarella, parmesan, and provolone)

1 small onion, chopped

1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced

1/4 cup green pepper, chopped

1/4 cup celery, chopped

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Ketchup, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a medium to large mixing bowl, combine everything except for the ketchup.

Knead into a loaf shape and move to a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

Spread ketchup over top of the loaf.

Bake for 1 hour and 15 minuets.

*I use McCann's Quick Cooking Irish Oatmeal

For a different take on the leftovers:

Take a slice of meatloaf and heat one side in some oil in a skillet until browned.

Flip it over and lay a slice of havarti cheese on top.

Cook until bottom is browned and cheese is slightly melted and gooey.

Slow Cooker Oatmeal

I am by no means a morning person. Cooking when I first wake up is pretty much out of the question. So, getting to make breakfast the night before and have it warm and waiting when I wake up is splendid!

2 cups milk

1 cup Irish oatmeal*, uncooked

1 apple, cored, peeled, and diced

1/2 cup raisins

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon butter, melted

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

Honey, for garnish

Spray inside of slow cooker with non-stick spray.

Combine all ingredients except for honey in the slow cooker.

Cook on low, overnight for 8 hours.

Serve with honey.

*I use McCann's Oatmeal, it's available at Trader Joe's.

Breakfast Pie

9 inch pie crust

4 or 5 sausage patties (pork or turkey), sliced

2 cups frozen shredded hash browns, thawed

1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/4 cup milk

4 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread sliced sausage over bottom of pie crust.

Spread hash browns over sausage and cheese over the hash browns.

Beat the eggs with the milk and then pour over the cheese.

Bake for 40 minutes.

Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Pumpkin French Toast with Cinnamon Syrup

Pumpkin French Toast:

15 ounce can solid pack pumpkin

6 eggs, beaten

3 egg yolks, beaten

4 cups milk

1-1/2 cups sugar

1 cup heavy whipping cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 loaf French bread, sliced 1-1/2 inches thick

Grease a 13x9" baking pan.
In a large mixing bowl, stir together pumpkin, eggs, egg yolks, milk, sugar, cream, and vanilla.

Arrange bread slices in baking pan and pour mixture over top, filling the pan about 3/4 full.

Cover and refrigerate overnight.

*You can bake it immediately. However, the longer it sits, the more of the mixture the bread can soak up.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Bake for 30 minutes.

Garnish with cinnamon syrup.

Cinnamon Syrup:

1-1/2 cups sugar

1 cup milk

1 tablespoon butter

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon vanilla.

1-1/2 tablespoon water

1 tablespoon cornstarch

In a medium saucepan over low heat, stir together sugar, milk, butter, cinnamon, and vanilla for 10 minutes.

In a small bowl, stir together water and cornstarch.

While stirring, pour cornstarch mixture into milk mixture.

Bring to a boil and reduce heat.

Let simmer on low heat for 5 to 10 minutes until thickened.

Pour into an airtight container (I use mason jars) and refrigerate.

Keeps for up to one week.

Apple Butter Raisin Bread

I made this bread for an autumn breakfast themed dinner party. Sadly, I wasn't able to get my camera in time to take a picture before everyone ate it.

2-1/2 cups flour

1/4 cup sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups milk

3/4 cup apple butter

1/4 cup almond oil

1 cup plus 1/4 cup raisins

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F

Grease a 9x5" bread/loaf pan with baking PAM

In a medium mixing bowl stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Make a well in the center.

In a small mixing bowl, stir together milk, apple butter, and almond oil.

Pour apple butter mixture into the flour mixture all at once, stirring to blend.

Fold in 1 cup raisins.

Pour into pan. Sprinkle remaining raisins on top.

Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove to a cooling rack.

Banana Browned-Butter-Rum Cupcakes

Banana Cupcakes:
1 egg, let sit at room temp for 30 min
1 cup, 2 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2 bananas)
1/4 sour milk (milk + 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice*)
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a glass measuring cup,
*pour 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice & then milk til reaching 1/4 cup line
Set aside for 5 min
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Line a 12 cup cupcake pan
Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder & soda, and spices
Add banana, sour milk, shortening & vanilla
Beat on low speed until combined
Add egg
Beat on medium speed for 2 min, until blended
Using an ice cream scoop, pour batter into wells
Bake for 15 to 20 min, until toothpick inserted comes out clean
Let cool in pan for 5 min
Remove from pan & place on wire rack til completely cool

Browned Butter Rum Frosting:

1/4 cup butter

1-1/2 cups powdered sugar

2 to 3 tablespoons rum

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

In a small saucepan, heat butter over low heat until melted
Keep butter on low heat until it becomes a light golden brown
Remove from heat
In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, 1 tablespoon rum, vanilla & spices
Add browned butter
Beat on low til combined
Add 1 tablespoon rum
Beat on medium speed until smooth
Add tablespoons of rum as needed

Mint Julep Cupcakes

Bourbon Cupcakes:

1-1/2 cups yellow cake mix

1/4 cup bourbon

1/4 cup water

2 tablespoons oil

1 egg & 1 egg white

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

Line a 12 cup cupcake pan

Beat mix, 1/4 cup bourbon, 1/4 cup water, oil, egg, and egg white

low for 1 min, until moist

medium for 2 min, until blended

Pour batter into liners using an ice cream scoop

Bake for 10 to 15 min, until toothpick comes out clean

Let cool in pan for 5 min

Let cool completely on wire rack

Bourbon Glaze:

1/4 cup butter

1-1/4 cup powdered sugar

About 3 or 4 tablespoons of bourbon

About 2 or 3 tablespoons of water

Melt butter in small saucepan on low heat

Remove from heat & pour into a small mixing bowl

Gradually stir in 1-1/4 cups powdered sugar

Gradually stir in bourbon & water, a tablespoon at a time

Alternate between bourbon and water

Add liquid until glaze has a thin consistency

Once cupcakes are cool, frost with glaze

Mint Frosting:

1/2 cup shortening

3 teaspoons mint extract

2 cups powdered sugar

About 3 or 4 tablespoons of water

Beat shortening & mint extract,

medium speed for about 30 seconds

Slowly beat in 1 cup powdered sugar

Add 2 tablespoons of water, one at a time

Slowly beat in remaining powdered sugar (1 cup) and water (1 or 2 tablespoons)

Frosting should be fluffy

Using a piping bag and decorative tip(s), frost cupcakes as desired

Whiskey Beef Stew

Growing up, my Grammy had the mountain woman habit of killing meat five times over. This made her steaks not so great, but her beef stew was first rate. I remember being a little ball of excitement when she would make it for dinner. Sadly, she passed away before I took a fancy to cooking and I never snagged the recipe from her. So, I turned to my trusty Better Homes & Gardens recipe book to get an idea of the basics. I've tweaked it here and there to fit my tastes, such as adding whiskey.

2 tablespoons flour

1 lb. beef stew meat

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cups beef broth

1 cup Irish whiskey

1 small to medium onion, chopped

1-1/4 teaspoon ground thyme

1 teaspoon oregano

1 teaspoon parsley

1/2 teaspoon marjoram

1/2 teaspoon rosemary

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 bay leaf

3 cups potatoes, cubed

1 cup carrots, sliced

1 cup celery, sliced

Place flour & 1/4 teaspoon thyme in a plastic bag, add beef chunks, a few at a time & shake to coat

In a large saucepan, heat oil & brown beef, drain off fat

Stir in broth, whiskey, onion, spices & bay leaf; bring to a boil & reduce heat

Cover & let simmer for about 1 hour, until meat is almost tender

Stir in potatoes, carrots, celery; bring to boil & reduce heat

Cover & let simmer for 30 minutes

Discard bay leaf & serve with a hearty bread

Honey-Vanilla Bundt Tea Muffins

Lavender: To Sprout or Not to Sprout

Just when I was beginning to think that my lavender plant would never pop out, I was shown a glimmer of hope. I had just returned home from visiting my mom over the weekend and expected to take a gander at the windowsill and just see soil. But, alas! I was greeted with a very pleasant surprise. After anxiously awaiting some sign of life for over ten days, I was welcomed home by a tiny stem and two itsy-bitsy leaves! I know it isn't much; but, it's made my day ever so cheery. Hopefully this is just the bravest sprout of all and others will follow it.

Butterscotch 'n' Coffee Cupcakes

Coffee Cupcakes:
1 1/2 cups yellow cake mix
2 tablespoons oil
1 egg
1 egg white
1/8 teaspoon coffee grounds
1/2 cup strongly brewed coffee

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
Line 12 cup cupcake pan with liners
Beat mix, oil, eggs, coffee, and grounds:
1 min, low speed until moistened
2 min, medium speed until blended
Pour batter into liners using an ice cream scoop, 2/3 of the way full
Bake for 10 to 15 min,

Let cool in pan for 5 min
Let cool completely before frosting on wire rack

Butterscotch Frosting:
1 cup brown sugar

In a saucepan combine brown sugar, shortening, butter, & salt
Stirring constantly, bring to a boil
Add milk & vanilla
Boil slowly for 3 min
Take off heat and let cool until lukewarm
Move mixture to a mixing bowl
Add powdered sugar slowly,
beating until desired consistency
Add drops of water to thin as needed
Using a decorating tip & piping bag, decorate as desired
Eat 'n' enjoy

Quick Bacon Snacks

Sliced white bread

Whipped cream cheese

Bacon

*either pre-cooked or raw bacon

**if it's raw, heat it in the microwave for about 45 seconds

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F

Remove crust from bread

Cut slice of bread in half

Spead cream cheese on slices

Rip pieces of bacon & place on slices

Roll slices up & place on cookie sheet

Bake for about 10 min,

until gold 'n' crispy

Enjoy!

Nun's Puffs Pastries

I was flipping through my enormous Better Homes & Gardens recipe book yesterday and came across this delightful recipe. It's perfect for a breakfast snack along with coffee!

1/2 cup butter
1 cup milk
3/4 cup flour
4 eggs
a few pinches of sugar

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
With baking Pam, spray 12 cup cupcake pan (including outside rims)
Melt butter in medium saucepan over med-low heat
Pour in milk, stirring
Bring to boil
Pour in all of the flour, stirring quickly
Stir until a sturdy ball forms
Remove from heat
Let stand 5 min
Add one egg at a time, beating after each
Stir til smooth
Fill wells in pan with dough about 2/3 full
Sprinkle sugar on tops
Bake for 15 to 30 min, until puffy and golden
To serve, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with honey

Windowsill Garden: Lavender

I've always loved flowers and gardens, but never tried my green thumb out. Years and years ago I had a Venus Flytrap named Herman that I adored. Sadly, he died.
Since I have such nice, wide windowsills and gigantic windows, I decided to live on the wild side and start a windowsill garden. I'm going to take it one plant at a time. At the craft store I found a simple starter kit for lavender and planted it today.
I have my fingers crossed that it'll bloom.

Cinnful Devil's Food Cupcakes

First, a little anecdote is needed. This is the first time I've made these lovelies, and the first batch was... well, let's say different. Silly me decided to put 2/3 cup of 80 proof cinnamon schnapps into the batter. Well, after exactly 14 minutes in the oven, Gerry and I were startled with a very loud BOOM. When we went into the kitchen, the oven door had been blown open. Luckily, there wasn't flames or damage. Gerry taste tested one of the cupcakes and made the same face that he makes after taking a heavy duty shot o' alcohol. He wanted more, but he was about to drive so I had to cut him off. Needless to say, I made a second batch using water and only a tablespoon of schnapps. These came out wonderfully. So, don't worry, this is the second recipe and shouldn't blow up your oven nor should it make you tipsy.

Cinnamon Devil's Food Cupcakes:

1 1/2 cups Devil's Food cake mix

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 egg

1 egg white

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2/3 cup water

1 tablespoon cinnamon schnapps

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F

Place cupcake liners in wells of pan

Beat all ingredients on low until moistened

Beat on medium speed for 2 min until blended

Pour batter into wells in pan using an ice cream scoop

Bake for about 15 min, until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean

Let stand in pan for 10 min

Remove from pan and place on cooling rack until completely cool

Dark Cinnamon Ganache:

2 bars dark chocolate (3.5 oz each)

3/4 cup heavy whipping cream

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon cinnamon schnapps

Chop chocolate into small pieces and place into a mixing bowl

Over medium heat, heat cream and butter
Stir frequently until boiling

Pour immediately over chocolate

Let stand 5 minutes

Stir mixture with a whisk until smooth

Stir in cinnamon schnapps

Spread over cupcakes

Whip remaining ganache with an electric mixer until fluffy

Using a piping bag and desired tip, decorate using whipped ganache

Enjoy!

The Comfort Sandwich

2 slices wheat bread

whipped cream cheese

sliced ham

honey

Toast bread

Heat ham in microwave approx. 20 seconds

Spread cream cheese on both slices of bread

Pile ham onto one slice of bread

Drizzle honey over ham

Place second slice of bread on top

Build-Me-Up Banana Smoothie

4 large ice cubes
2 ripe bananas; peeled, sliced, and frozen
1 scoop Vanilla protein powder
½ cup milk
Dash of cinnamon

Crush ice cubes in a blender
Add banana slices, protein powder, milk, & cinnamon
Blend until smooth
Pour into a glass, knock your socks off, and enjoy!
Feel like indulging a bit? Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and reduce milk to ¼ cup
